Piece Shell
This science project is going to measure the strength of eggs. Eggs are known to be resilient because of their exact shape. The weight is distributed very well around the shell. I will give you several things to test the weight and pressure that an egg shell can absorb.
First get a good dozen eggs. They are only about $1.00 at the store for a dozen. This all depends where you live it could cost more. Test on the egg strength is to see if you can break an egg shell with your hand. Most men will have no doubt they can do this. Make sure the person doing this does not have any jewelry on their hand which includes rings, bracelets and watches.
Place an egg in the middle of the palm of the hand and have the volunteer wrap their fingers around the egg evenly. Do not place this on your hand heel. It goes in the middle or cup of the palm. Now allow them to squeeze the egg. Did it break? If you did this correctly the egg did not break. Why? Due to the shape of the egg and the strength of the shell weight is distributed evenly around the egg and you are squeezing around the full base of the egg.
To test this even further take the egg carton and cut it into 4 sections. Place one egg into each section of the carton holder cardboard and put them in a square about the size of a piece of paper. Take a large book and place it on top of the eggs so that they support the book corners and raises it off the counter or table. You will see the eggs do not break and support the weight of the book. Now add another one on top of the last book. Each time you add a book record if anything is happening with the eggs. Gently keep adding books to determine how much weight the eggs can support. When you find the breaking point remove the books that were support and weigh them to determine how much weight the eggs could handle. This is really incredible.
Be ready with paper towels as this science project will require cleaning up from broken eggs. You may want to do the project next to a sink in the kitchen or an area that does not have carpet so clean up is easy.

My dog bit my water turtle and there is a piece of his shell missing were the dog bit him. what do i do?
The bite mark is on the tip of his shell by his head. It is like a whole and I can see the red tissue.
From your description I cannot tell if the hole goes through one of the marginal scutes and just through the shell or through the shell into the actual body of the turtle (pleural or vertebral scutes). Either way a vet visit is needed. There is a chance (slim and not so good) that with good antiseptic care the hole through a marginal scute, not into the turtles body but through the shell could heal over time - as in months to years without RX meds and treatment from a vet. The chance of that healing occurring if the hole actually goes into the turtles body itself is highly unlikely. Even if there is no internal damage (a very real probability due to the compression that must have occured in addition to the puncture from the tooth) the turtle will most likely suffer from internal infection issues that will become systemic and cause death - faster if it is 'lucky' and agonizingly slowly if not.
This is not really a 'what should I do' situation - clearly the turtle should be seen by a qualified vet asap. In reality this is a 'what will you do' situation - will you seek out the medical treatment and care this turtle needs to have a chance to be well or at least be able to be euthanized should there be irreparable internal damage, or will you allow this animal you have claimed as your own to suffer without seeking care? Clearly the choice is yours - you've chosen to own this turtle and the dog - accidental or not the damage occurred while both belong to you and are under your care. Will you seek to rectify whatever mistakes allowed this to happen or will you ignore the turtle and the injury and allow it to suffer even more?
I sincerely hope you will choose to be responsible for the turtle and take it to a herp vet. In case you do not have a qualified reptile vet already I'm including a link to a state by state and town by town reptile vet listing. In all likelihood injected antibiotics will be needed, perhaps debrieding and patching as well - even if you cannot afford all of those things, at the very least this animal should be seen for a prognosis and supportive care in life or death.
Accidents can happen to anyone, sometimes by something we could have helped - sometimes by things we cannot control. It is how we deal with situations such as this that defines who we are and really determines whether we can call ourselves stewards of the animals in our care or, as those who disapprove of pet keeping call us - selfish individuals who keep animals hostage without caring for or seeing to their basic needs. What sort of caretaker will you be?
