Whats a good Good Drum Set for alt/punk rock?

I have been playing drums for 2 years and just started a band. I have a full set of Sabian Aax Cymbals
but i still have a really bad cb drum kit. What would be a good kit for Alternative/Punk music?

you could use anything for a punk or alternative band. i'm not sure what you're asking but...you should be focusing more on the tones of the shells. if playing fast punk rock, i find it's best to use something with a deep bass, high rack toms, a nice low end floor (around 14"), and a piccolo snare works very well for punk. a Ddrum Dominion 5-Piece Maple Drum Set would be a good example, they sell for around 1000.00 at musiciansfriend right now. and maybe a Pearl M1330 Maple Piccolo Snare Drum for around 250.00 would sound perfect for your set up. just make sure you've got some good hi hats. those will make you or break you in a punk rock band!

Joking in the office???

I am teacher in a great school. However, recently when I go into the school office, the secretaries make jokes about me. I am bald by choice, and sometimes my head shines. I admitt that and I understand that. But, the other day I walked in with a duster in my hand, and the secretary asked, "Hey there, you gonna use that to buff your shiny head?" It was totally unexpected. I didn't laugh but said that I was going to use it to clean some dust from my classroom. Needless to say parents of other students were in the office, too.

On another ocassion i had come from outside duty and it was pretty hot outside. Again, my head was a little shiny, and the other secretary said, "Wow, what a glow!"

I've also walked down the hallway while the other was coming up the hallway and she said, "Nice walking there little boy."

I am one of the only two AFrican-Americans who work at this school. How should I handle these ladies?? What is the best approach without hurting feelings.

Tell them that you appreciate how comfortable they must feel around you to make such jokes, but that you think it's in poor taste and ask they stop their non work related comments.

Crash Brilliant

Sooner or later many investors come across the concept of buying on margin, or using borrowed money to purchase stock to get extra oomph in their portfolio. But new investors should think twice before taking the plunge.

Brokers are only too happy to lend you money to buy stocks and bonds if you open a margin account. You have to put up only part of the securities' price, and your broker lends you the rest. You just sign a couple of forms, and your broker runs a routine credit check on you. Brokers are eager to approve your application because margin accounts lead to more business and higher profits for them.

You can come out ahead in rising markets because you put up only 50 percent of the cost of your stocks and 25 percent of the cost of your bonds. So your money works at least twice as hard for you. The interest that you pay on your margin loan is not only relatively low but is also deductible from your taxable income up to the amount of your net investment income for the year.

Consider this scenario: It's late October 1998. After a sharp downturn over the past several months, the market has turned up. You find a stock you like. It's speculative, but you're willing to take the risk. The name is eBay. It's part of the red-hot Internet group in which Amazon.com and Yahoo! are doing so well. You have $10,000 to invest in your margin account. The quote on eBay is 50. With margin you can borrow money from your broker to buy additional eBay shares. Using

100 percent of your margin capability, you have buying power of $20,000-$ 10,000 of your money and $10,000 from the broker.

You buy $20,000 of eBay and get 400 shares. The price of eBay's stock soars to 733/8 the next day, and it's off to the races. The price skyrockets to 234 by November 24. You cash out, selling 400 shares and getting back $93,600. By using margin, your profit is $73,600 ($93,600 minus $10,000 of your capital and $10,000 to pay back the loan). If you hadn't used margin, your profit would only be $36,800.

Sound easy? Maybe too easy. You look brilliant. But wait a minute. New investors must be careful when borrowing money from a brokerage and using it to buy additional stock. It's a two-edged sword. If the price of the stock were to go down, the invested money would decline twice as fast. In the stock market crash of 1987, many stocks fell 40 percent or more in just a few days. Any account margined to the hilt suffered horrendous losses.

Margin isn't free: You pay interest on the borrowed money. The rate is marked up from the broker loan rate. A typical interest rate charged in early 1999 was 9.75 percent on a loan of less than $50,000. For larger loans the rate may be as much as two percentage points less.

It's wise not to venture out on margin until you've made several profitable trades. The best time to use margin is during the early phase of a new bull market. Once you recognize a new bear market, though, you should get off margin immediately and raise cash. An account should not be fully margined all the time. When progress is being made during a bull market, heavy margin can be used.

But when a correction sets in you should reduce your margin by selling shares. It's important to remember that it is a market of stocks, not a stock market. You must watch your stock positions and respond accordingly. Don't take solace in the general market averages. During the market retreat that occurred in 1998, many stocks turned lower well before the Dow Industrials revealed serious weakness in July and August.

If your stock rises-great! If it rises enough, you could sell some shares, pay off the margin loan and come out ahead. But if the gains in your stock don't cover your interest payments, you lose money. And if the stock price falls, you could suffer in two ways. Not only would your investment dwindle, but you could receive a call from your broker-a so-called margin call-to put up more cash.

A margin call occurs when the value of your collateral falls below a certain percent of your total purchase price-usually 30 to 35 percent. If the worth of your holdings drops under that level, your broker will demand that you deliver enough cash or other securities to bring your collateral back up to the required amount. If you can't deliver sometimes by the next day-the broker will sell your stock, take back what was lent you, and collect interest.

Before you decide to borrow on margin, ask yourself this key question: "Do I believe in the shares so wholeheartedly that I would be willing to borrow money even from a bank in order to own them?" If not, a margin account is not for you. If you do invest on margin, keep a close eye on your stocks. Check the prices often. You don't want a margin call to take you by surprise.

12 Brilliant Doubts - Unanswered?

1.If all the nations in the world are in debt(am not joking. even US has got debts), where did all the money go? (weird)
2.When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it? (to be give a thought)
3.What is the speed of darkness? (absurd)
4.If the "black box" flight recorder is never damaged during a plane crash, why isn't the whole airplane made out of that
stuff? (Very Good thinking)
5.Who copyrighted the copyright symbol? (who knows)
6.Can you cry under water? (let me try)
7.Why do people say, "you've been working like a dog" when dogs just sit around all day? (i think they meant somethingelse)
8.Why are the numbers on a calculator and a phone reversed? (God knows)
9.Do fish ever get thirsty? (let me ask and tell)
10.Can you get cornered in a round room?
11.Why do birds not fall out of trees when they sleep? (tonight i will stay and watch)
12.What came first, the fruit or the color orange? (seed)

I'll do my best, here...sorry if I sound like I'm taking this too seriously, with some of these.

1. Good question. Maybe that's why it's so hard to get ahead. Ultimately, only debt exists.

2. Probably dogs. If they seem to like it more, we could logically conclude that it tastes better.

3. The same as the speed of light. Darkness = absence of light, so it would be the speed at which light leaves.

4. I dunno. Maybe it costs too much to make (and with everyone being in debt, no less!). Or maybe it would be too heavy to get off the ground.

5. Ironically, the person who did stole it from somebody else. (No, not seriously. I hope that's obvious.)

6. Yep. The tears would simply be absorbed into the water around you.

7. That being the case, most of the people I work with DO work like dogs.

8. Sounds like a good setup for a dumb blonde joke...

9. Do you ever crave air? (And to the person who answered, above me, I don't believe that qualifies as thirst.)

10. Figuratively, yes. Literally, no.

11. I don't think they sleep perched on the branches. ...do they?

12. The color. I'm pretty sure things were orange before oranges came about. As for which one was given a name first...that, I can't be sure of.

One of the simplest ways to adjust your guitar or bass can have a profound effect on its tone, and better yet, the adjustment is free and takes very little time or skill to perform. Adjust the height of your guitar or bass' pickups according to the guidelines in this article and, with a little experimentation, you can come closer to playing the tone of your fantasies (yes, the ones where you are on stage sporting tight pants and trying to stay on your feet amidst a deluge of cheering and panties-or jock straps, whatever the case may be).

How Pickup Height Changes Tone

(Please follow the link at the bottom of the article to view the associated figures)

Pickups adjusted closer to the strings will generally produce a punchier, fuller tone with higher output. Adjust the pickups too high however, and the tone may become distorted (especially when the strings are played hard). Additionally, pickups with stronger magnetic fields can affect string vibrations when they are adjusted too high and may produce a "warbling" tone that is generally undesirable.

Pickups adjusted further away from the strings will produce a woodier tone with a better response to dynamic playing: softer attacks will produce cleaner tones and harder attacks will increase output without losing tonal definition. The slight decrease in output from lower pickups can be compensated for by adjusting your amplifier and effect settings. Of course, adjusting the pickups too low will result in an overall loss of tone and output, regardless of amp and effect settings.

Where to Start with Pickup Adjustments

The majority of pickups with plastic mounting rings are height-adjustable, you can simply turn the screw on either side of the ring to raise and lower each side of the pickup. Mounting rings with three height adjustment screws are usually for adjusting the slant of the pickup's face as well as the height. Adjust three-screw mounting rings so the plane of the pickup's face is parallel to the plane of the strings. If the pickups in your bass or guitar are not height-adjustable, remove them and place some material in their cavities to "shim" them up to the correct height (do not use ferrous material or anything that will interfere with the magnetic field or electrical signal of the pickup). Dense foam padding works well as a shim; it will press the pickup upwards like a spring, allowing you to raise and lower the pickup with the mounting screws alone, eliminating the need for different sizes of shims.

Finding your own perfect tone will require a little experimentation, but there is a good starting point from which to begin scouting out the tonal possibilities. Fret the lowest and highest strings at the last fret then adjust the pickups so they are about 1/16" - 3/32" below the strings. You may want the bridge pickup to be a little closer to the strings and the neck pickup to be a little further to accommodate the different vibration patterns at each location. Furthermore, you can lower the bass side of the pickup if you want more treble response, or lower the treble side for more bass response.

Pickups with individually-adjustable pole pieces may be further adjusted to balance their response to the different string sizes. The bigger the string, the higher the pickup's output and pickups respond more to plain strings than wound strings. The heights of pole pieces (if they are adjustable) can usually be adjusted on the face of the pickup (when the pole pieces themselves are screws) or on the back of the pickup, sometimes behind a back plate. Adjust the low E pole piece lower than the rest, the A should be slightly higher than the E and the D should be slightly higher than the A. If your guitar has a wound G string then its pole piece should be adjusted slightly higher than the D pole piece, the B should be adjusted only slightly higher than the low E pole piece and the high E should be a little higher than the B's pole piece. A plain G string's pole piece should be adjusted only slightly higher than the low E pole piece, the B should be slightly higher than the G and the high E a little higher than the B. Take a look at figure 1 and figure 2 for a visual comparison of the plain and wound G pole piece configurations. Generally, pole piece height adjustments should only be used as a means of balancing (or unbalancing, if you desire the tone) the pickup's response to the individual strings.

Finding your ideal tone by adjusting your pickups takes a little experimentation. Try out several different configurations, you can get a lot of different tones, especially if you have more than one pickup and they are wired with a blend control to mix their signals. Occasionally you will find a tone that you had not even imagined before! Thanks for reading, good luck finding your new tones.

Yamaha Virago randomly sputters while driving?

So the weather was nice the other day and I took out my motorcycle for a ride. It is a 1985 Yamaha Virago 1000cc. It randomly sputters and loses power and has a muffled sound, then it will be ok for a while and then sputter again. It idles perfect- plugs and gas are good.

I remember this happened once over the summer but I thought it was just a fluke as it never happened again.

I know what you are thinking- the problem is bike is almost 24 years old and has a bizzillion miles on it. It actually has always run perfectly, and is pretty much all custom. If it helps your diagnosis, I'm running stage 1 jets and full exhaust; about 6 months ago I had the carbs professionally cleaned, adjusted, and the whole thing dyno tuned so I think the carbs should be good.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!

It sounds like it's getting fuel-starved.
If your carbs were professionally cleaned I would suspect some rust or crud in the gas tank that's blocking the petcock screen/filter.
Pull the petcock and clean out the tank.
Viragos also had a vacuum operated "mixture control valve" in the fuel system.
A faulty mixture control valve can also cause the symptoms you describe.

Beautiful Filipina women may just be the best partner to spend the rest of your life with. Sweet Filipinas have a unique beauty - both Asian and Latin, they are very hospitable and they are totally devoted to their husband, as part of the Filipino culture that they grew up in. They are very supportive and loving, not only to their spouses but also to their entire family.

What's so special about dating charming Philippine Women

A great thing about beautiful Filipina women is that although they have a deep sense of being Filipino in them, as shown by their amicable and pleasant charm, they are also well aware of the Western culture, more so, of the American culture. Pretty Filipinas speak perfect English which is great because you don't need to learn the language to meet beautiful Filipinas.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to win the heart of a beautiful Pinay (Filipina woman) that you have set your heart on.

If you are still dating online and looking for relationship with Filipina beauties:

  • Make sure you consider that the girl lives in a different time zone so do not set chat times at 11 am Eastern Standard Time as that will be 11 pm in the Philippine Islands. Show your lady this early on that you are a very considerate man.
  • Learn some simple Filipino phrases and surprise her. Try the following:
    • Ang ganda mo - You are beautiful
    • Mahal kita - I love you
    • Iniisip kita lagi - I always think of you

  • When you are talking about your lives, be truthful. Filipina brides can sense if you are lying so if you have nothing good to say about a topic you are discussing, then better change the subject.
  • Short messaging is a big deal in the Philippines as there are a lot of people that actually use the text message function of their phone more than the call. So send her a sweet SMS once or twice a day just to let her know you are thinking of her.

If you have gone to the Philippines:

  • Acknowledge that in dating Filipina women, courtship will play a huge part. You really have to woo a Philippine bride and this does not necessarily mean that you have to shower her with gifts. A token of love or two will do and they do not have to be expensive. You do not need to bring gifts to her family members but note that, the parents will take this as a sign of respect so it is best that you have something in tow. Again, it does not have to be expensive. Aside from that, you would also have to make her friends like you which is basically something that you have to do in all ladies, unless you want to have a hard time making her like you.
  • Be wary of cultural nuances. In some parts of the Philippines, it may be frowned upon if you ask to sleep in the same room before marriage with beautiful Filipina women. Although this is rare and most cities are very open to having relations prior to being married, still, it is a good idea to be wary.

Car question for people who were teenagers or older during the 1980s: Seeing sum1 drive an Asian car rare then?

In the 1980s--when you were in your teens, or even older, was it highly unusual to see a young person (who wasn't Asian) drive an Asian import car during that time? Were Hondas and Toyotas, etc. considered cool and stylish like they are today?

I was born in 1982.

American cars were not so reliable, and people were buying Japanese cars because they broke less often.

Coupled with their lower gas use, and reasonable purchase price, they made for Very Good commuter cars. Back then, most US cars were rear wheel drive, and the imports had quite a few Fwd models, which were better in ice and snow.

the 1983 Toyota Celica had no US made competition.
The Mazda rotary had no competition. Nor did the Datsun 280z. these were cars that were sporty, reliable, with decent gas mileage and good prices. quite a few of the car buffs were quite impressed with them.

However for long drives, the Big US sedan was still the best thing.
